Top Ten Drill Bit Set Reviews

When purchasing a drill, the next step automatically takes you to  selecting a dependable drill bit for your project.  It is surprising to discover that rotary tools have been utilized since the dawn of human civilization.  Prehistoric humans used flat sticks with a flint stone at the end to create holes.  Humans have used many materials as a “bit” for their purposes, ranging from bone and antlers to metal.

Drill bits come in many shapes and sizes for different purposes.  It’s very hard to find a kit that will supply everything that you could possibly need for home improvement.  There are many tasks that you have to plan for when renovating a home.  Different kits have different bits.  Manufacturers don’t make it any easier.  There are so many different kinds of bits in the market, it’s hard to ascertain what is best.

When reviewing drill bit sets, I split them into to categories.  I look for the most complete and best rated sets available and place them in the complete set category.  We all want to make that one purchase that we can anticipate using the most often.

The second category is the specialist category.  These are smaller and more specialized sets that you can purchase to supplement what you already have.  Sometimes you already have a wonderful complete set that you are very satisfied with, but it is missing that one drill bit that you need.  The suggested add-ons in this list can alleviate that problem at minimum cost to you.

Tile MaterialsBenefitsTips
Ceramic TileLarge variety of styles and colors availableThis material is very porous. A glaze can be applied to it to remedy this.
Porcelain Tile*Actually a type of ceramic tile. Is available in many colors and styles as well. Better suited for high moisture areas than regular ceramic.
Glass TileSparkling lustrous beauty. Not recommended for floor tile.
Quarry TilePerfect for flooring because the rough surface provides gripVery porous, not recommended for kitchen areas
Granite and MarbleHas a natural beauty and is best suited for bathrooms and kitchens. Both materials scratch easy. Do not place stone tile near hot kitchen pots. Stone tiles are not resistant to hight temperature.

There are so many amazing kits on the market.  I researched and identified 6 highly rated complete sets and four specialist sets that contain pieces that are not ordinarily included in complete sets for an unknown reason.

I graded these sets based on piece count, organization, and portability.  I also looked at what pieces these kits contained and what they lacked for comparison purposes.

Piece Count

Piece count is important because it is an indicator of the different types of bits and the varying sizes that comes with each type.

Portability and Organization

I also look at the different cases that these sets come in.  I like to see kits with multiple cases because that means you have the option of taking one case with you instead of hauling the entire set with you.

Another thing to notate are the trays that contain the individual bits.  Are they made of a strong material?  Will they last?

Things to Know

If you have trouble making a decision, allow me to identify certain things to look for.

Durability

What your Project requires.  For example, woodworking bits, countersinks etc.

When shopping for a complete set, getting a large and comprehensive set is wise if you plan to engage in a lot of DIY or professional work.  On the other hand, if you know you will only be using a small portion of that set then it is more cost effective to look for a smaller kit.

Are you planning to work with wood? Then you want a kit with brad point drill bits and at least one countersink included in the set.

If you plan to drill holes in metal, find a kit that includes HSS, titanium, or cobalt steel drill bits.  You want the tougher stuff for harder work.

When looking at a drill bit set for your upcoming home improvement project, ask yourself what kind of material that you are looking for.  Most bits are made from stainless steel.  It’s the cheapest material that manufacturers use.  Some kits will have the majority of their bits made of stainless steel and will have a small selection made from cobalt steel or have a titanium oxide coating.

Titanium Bits– Titanium bits are high speed steel bits that are coated in a titanium oxide coating.  The titanium helps reduce heat from the friction and make the bits last longer.  Titanium is good for wood and metalwork.

Cobalt Steel–  Do not be mistaken.  Cobalt drill bits are not made of actual pure cobalt.  They are made from a cobalt alloy.  The cobalt increases the strength of the bit and makes it more heat resistant.  These bits are very distinctive because they come in a dull gold color.  The gold color wears off so don’t panic if it does.  They can be sharpened easily and still retain durability because of the alloy mix.

When reading through drill bit set descriptions and components, you will notice that there are quite a few different types of drill bits that are commonly used.  For experienced DIYers and professionals, this isn’t a concern, but I thought that this may pose a problem for beginners.  For this purpose, I have posted a list of terms identifying commonly used drill bits and their purpose.

Terms

HSS- HSS stands for High Speed Steel.  Drill bits with this label are made to endure high speeds, yield better results, and dissipate heat better than regular drill bits.  They are outstanding for metal work, woodwork, and plastics.

Twist- The most general-purpose drill bit is also the most popular.  It is pointy with a spiral flute.  They are good in just about any material and are less expensive.  One problem with them is that the smaller ones break easier and the larger ones are more expensive.  They also dull when working with certain materials.

Phillips- A bit with a cross shaped head that corresponds to a screw.

Posidriv- A bit similar to a Phillips bit, but with four tick marks around the cross for increased grip.

Slotted- A bit with a tapered head that corresponds to a screw.

Spade- A drill bit that is meant for ripping through wood and other soft material.  Usually used when you need a to make a hole quickly and are not concerned with how it looks.

Torx-The trademarked bit that is characterized by a 6-point star head for a corresponding screw.

Nutdrivers or Nutsetters- A bit for tightening nuts and bolts.

Brad point drill bits – used for precision in wood working.  An extended sharp point keeps the bit from wobbling as you start a hole.  It creates a clean hole that does not need to be sanded at point of exit.

Step Drill bit- A specialty drill bit or cutting tool used to create holes in metal and woodworking.

Hole Saws-A bit for making circular holes.  It consists of a metal cylinder with teeth.

Countersink-A Countersink bit can enlarge and bevel the rip of a drilled hole so that a screw can be drilled flush to the surface.

Hopefully, this list and the knowledge provided will help you make an informed decision for yourself.
